Dollfolio Beta

Beta Notes

New features, bug fixes, catalog cleanup, and the occasional admission that something got a little weird.

Latest

Your Collection, Your Way

This update brings more control over completion, easier ways to manage multiple items, and new tools for keeping track of your collection’s history. Also, considerably less clutter in component lists. You’re welcome.

Completion that fits how you collect

You now have more control over what counts toward your collection’s completion. Don’t collect books? Exclude them. Want historical books to count, but not Girl of the Year books? You can do that, too.

Settings include collection-line preferences alongside item categories, so your progress can reflect your collecting interests. Similar categories have also been consolidated to make those choices clearer.

The collection completion bar has finally retired its outdated “historical completion” label and now reflects your broader collection.

A few overdue fixes

  • Component lists no longer repeat source links or display unnecessary quantities for single pieces and conventional pairs, such as shoes and socks.
  • The 35th Anniversary dolls now require ownership of the actual anniversary edition. Owning another Felicity or Addy doll no longer gives you credit for that version.
  • You can now mark an item as received as a gift, so it doesn’t need a purchase price attached. Some dolls arrive through love rather than questionable financial decisions.

Less clicking, more collecting

Bulk collection management is here! Add multiple items by character, update details across your copies, manage your wishlist and grails, or organize items with private tags.

Here’s how:

1. Open My Collection → Bulk edit.

2. Choose Add from catalog to find items to add, or Edit my collection to update copies you already own.

3. Filter by character or collection, category, or item name.

4. Select individual rows or choose Select this page. You can work with up to 100 rows per batch.

5. Choose your action. When editing collection details, make changes directly in the table—editing a row automatically selects it.

6. Click Review selected rows, check your selections, then Apply changes.

On a computer, you can use Tab to move between fields, Space to select checkboxes, and Enter within a text field to move down its column.

Unsure which version you own? Choose “Not sure which version” and confirm it later. Check “All pieces” only when you own the complete set. Already-owned items are skipped when bulk adding to help prevent accidental duplicates. Grails retain the existing five-active-grails limit.

Your collection records, downloadable

You can now export your records and save private snapshots of your collection.

To export, open My Collection → Export & backups, then choose:

  • Download CSV for a spreadsheet of your current collection, including versions, selected components, tags, and purchase details.
  • Download full JSON for a fuller export that also includes your wishlist, grails, goals, sold archive, history, and profile preferences.

To save a snapshot:

  • Choose Save backup to save and download a copy of your current records.
  • Choose Save annual snapshot to capture your collection for the current year.
  • Find saved snapshots farther down the page, where you can download them again or delete them.

Snapshots retain the information captured when you saved them, even as your collection changes. Annual snapshots are created manually and record your collection as it looks that day.

Downloads include private notes and purchase information, so keep them somewhere appropriate. Importing and restoring records will come later.

Something to work toward

Collection goals now include manually updated progress, starter templates, editable details, and an archive for completed or abandoned goals.

Open My Collection → Goals, write your own goal or choose a template, and set a target. Update your progress as you go, then mark the goal completed when you’re ready. Completed or abandoned goals can be archived and restored later.

Track missing pieces, work toward a character’s collection, or finally organize that shelf you keep meaning to get to. You set the target and update your progress.

Automatically calculated progress from catalog data is planned for a later update.

Every collection has a story

Your private collection timeline brings together acquisitions, grail achievements, completed goals, and completed-set events. You can also add personal milestones or record when you finish a whole collection.

Open My Collection → Timeline to browse your history. Choose “Add a moment to your story” to record a milestone, with an exact date, just a year, or no date at all.

Copies with an exact acquisition date also have upcoming anniversaries. If you only remember the year—or don’t remember the date at all—that’s fine. Dollfolio keeps that uncertainty intact.

Where to find everything

Look for Bulk edit, Goals, Timeline, and Export & backups in the navigation row under My Collection. On narrower screens, scroll the row sideways to see all the tabs.

A little peek at what’s next

Next up: making these new tools easier to find, giving the catalog a few more behind-the-scenes checks, and making completion easier to understand—especially when you’re staring at a percentage wondering, “Okay, but what am I missing?”

More catalog photos are on the way, too! I’m working through missing images, filling in component lists, and cleaning up catalog details so there’s more to browse—and fewer blank spaces.

After that, I’m excited to explore smarter collection gaps, goals that update as you add items, and more ways to see how your collection has grown. Eventually, some of those collecting victories deserve something cute to share.

A Bigger Catalog, Better Navigation & Clearer Completion

Dollfolio has gotten yet another fairly substantial cleanup. There are more collections to browse, fewer duplicate catalog entries, and better ways to see what you own, what you’re missing, and what “complete” actually means for your collection.

Also, the photos are back. Moving storage broke some images on profiles and following feeds, which was not exactly the intended improvement.

Fixes & cleanup

  • Photos on personal profiles and following feeds are working again.
  • Profile navigation arrows are fixed.
  • Grace’s pajamas have their correct photo.
  • CAPTCHA has been added to help keep bot accounts out. Dollfolio is intended for people collecting dolls, rather than bots collecting accounts.

More to collect

The catalog now includes Disney, collector dolls, Contemporary Characters, World by Us, and 2025–2026 Truly Me items. Some photos are already in place, with the rest coming soon.

Truly Me is now organized into Outfits, Accessories, Furniture, and Dolls, with separate progress totals. Accessories also use their release-year labels, matching the outfits.

There has been another round of catalog cleanup, too. Duplicate bundles, gift sets, doll-and-accessory offers, and larger collection packages have been removed so the same items aren’t counted repeatedly. “Bundle” has been removed from the glossary and elsewhere on the site.

Mini-doll included pieces now live with their corresponding dolls, including Gabriela, Grace, Isabelle, Lea, Luciana, and Saige. Blix’s included pieces have also been merged into his doll entry within Corinne’s collection.

Book titles no longer need “paperback book” attached to them. The category already handles that announcement.

Finding your way around

Navigation now centers on Browse, Collection, and Community, with Hi, [name] opening your profile and account options. Shared navigation within Collection and Community should make moving between related pages easier.

When you’re signed in, the homepage now acts as your dashboard, with collection, wishlist, and following counts, recent collection activity, and shortcuts back to the places you use.

Your collection now has:

  • Search, for finding a particular item.
  • Category filters, for narrowing things down.
  • Newest, oldest, and A–Z sorting, depending on what you’re looking for.
  • Grid and list views. Sometimes you want to admire everything. Sometimes you just need to find the outfit.

Community brings Following, Collectors, and Lists together, with more compact activity feeds and list cards. Official posts and lists live under From Dollfolio.

Browse puts filters and category shortcuts closer to the front. Profiles give more attention to the collector, and item pages make Collection, Wishlist, and Grail actions easier to find under Track this item.

What counts as complete?

Completion now uses the same rules across collection progress, Missing Pieces, stats, and character checklists.

An owned item without a meaningful multi-piece checklist is complete by ownership. For a multi-piece set, every required piece for your selected release needs to be marked owned. Optional pieces and excluded catalog entries don’t count against you.

If you own multiple copies, one complete copy is enough. Pieces from separate copies aren’t combined to create a complete set.

Character checklists now distinguish:

  • Complete: you own the item, and its required pieces are accounted for.
  • Owned but incomplete: you own the item, but its checklist still has missing pieces.
  • Missing: you don’t own the item yet.
  • Excluded: the catalog entry doesn’t count toward completion.

The new Collection → Completion page brings together your meter, a “Why isn’t this complete?” explanation, smart gap suggestions, and collection insights. Character stats also show progress by era, where era information is available.

A percentage should be able to defend itself.

And because every collector has their own idea of enough, “Complete enough” settings let you set a private goal: focus on a category, accept ownership as enough, or skip particular items and pieces. Those preferences stay separate from standard catalog completion and public stats.

Dollfolio can tell you what is missing. You still get to decide whether you care.

Coming soon

Bulk collection management will make adding and editing larger groups of items less repetitive.

Data ownership and safety features are also planned, including collection exports, imports, backups, and a clearer history of changes.

Feedback & fixes: Your suggestions and issue reports have been coming in. Thank you so much for helping make Dollfolio better! I’ll be setting aside time over the coming weeks to work through them.

Lists, Profiles & a Better Catalog

A lot has happened since the last update. Girl of the Year got a fairly aggressive cleanup, lists are here, profiles have gotten some personality, and Dollfolio now knows a lot more about the actual history of your collection.

The catalog is hopefully also getting easier to navigate.

Or easier to get lost in, depending on your intentions.

New

  • Lists are here! You can now make lists of catalog items and set them to public or private. Wishlists, favorites, collecting projects, rankings, hyper-specific themes only you understand--go forth.
  • Dollfolio has lists too. Official Dollfolio lists will be used for curated collections, guides, and themes.
  • Dollfolio now has its own profile page. This is where featured lists, official Dollfolio lists, site updates, and other things worth highlighting will live.
  • Collector profiles have gotten a pretty big upgrade. They can now say more about you than “owns 14 Samantha items.”
  • You can add a favorite doll, favorite item, and favorite childhood doll(s). Plural, because I am not here to rewrite anyone’s childhood.
  • Profiles can now include your collecting style, what you collect / what you don’t collect, favorite AG era, top five collections, and favorite collection lines.
  • There are more profile questions for talking about how and why you collect.
  • A new profile showcase lets you feature the parts of your collection you actually want people to notice first.
  • Catalog contributor badges and other collecting-based badges can now appear on profiles. Small digital rewards for our small physical possessions.
  • The top navigation has been reorganized. Dollfolio kept getting more pages and eventually the menu had to acknowledge this reality.

More Collection Tracking

Dollfolio can also keep track of more than whether you currently own something.

  • Items can now be marked as sold / previously owned instead of disappearing from your collection history completely.
  • You can mark items as grails and keep track of the things sitting at the top of your personal collecting mountain.
  • Collection items can have custom private tags, so you can organize things in whatever weirdly specific way makes sense to you without making everyone else learn your filing system.
  • You can track collection goals and give them a status.
  • Dollfolio can now retain historical collection events, creating a better foundation for showing how a collection has changed over time.

That foundation also powers a few new collection tools:

  • Grail items
  • Personal collection taxonomy
  • Sold archive
  • Grail history

The idea is that removing something from your current collection should not necessarily erase the fact that you owned it, and finally finding a grail should not make it vanish from your collecting history like the years of searching never happened.

Your collection has lore now.

Improved

  • Girl of the Year character photos have been added across the catalog. The dolls have received their headshots.
  • Girl of the Year books got another catalog pass. Hardcover and paperback versions of the same story should no longer appear as two separate things you need to own for completion. Your bookshelf may care. Dollfolio does not.
  • Collection components have been updated so things like pamphlets, child-items, and other minor pieces no longer count against set completion.
  • You can still see those pieces where they belong, but you should no longer be punished because the secondhand outfit you bought did not include a folded piece of paper last seen in 2007.
  • Breadcrumbs have been added around the catalog, so when you find yourself several pages deep in Samantha’s collection you can at least reconstruct the events that brought you there.
  • A contextual glossary now explains American Girl collecting terms where they actually appear. “Meet accessories” should no longer require previous enrollment in American Girl Studies.
  • Character landing pages have gotten more structure and should feel more like pages about the character instead of a product grid that happens to know her name.
  • Characters with long-running collections can now have their items organized into collection eras, making it easier to distinguish original releases, later versions, rereleases, and the many lives some of these collections have lived.
  • The Browse button should load faster than it did before. I am deliberately saying faster and not fast.

Fixed

  • Duplicate Girl of the Year bundle listings have been removed, including Complete Starter Collections, Whole World Collections, and similar bundles where all of the actual items already exist individually in the catalog.
  • More component rules have been adjusted so completion percentages better reflect the pieces people reasonably consider part of completing a set.
  • A few more Girl of the Year catalog relationships have been cleaned up while I was already in there moving everything around.

You know how cleaning one drawer somehow ends with everything you own sitting on the floor? That, but with American Girl metadata.

Profiles

Profiles should now feel a lot less like an account attached to a checklist and a lot more like an actual collector profile.

You can show what you love, what you grew up with, which eras you gravitate toward, what kinds of things you collect, what kinds of things you absolutely do not need taking up space in your home, and which pieces of your collection you are particularly proud of.

Two collectors could own many of the exact same things and still end up with profiles that feel completely different.

That is the goal. We contain multitudes.

Catalog

The catalog should also be a little friendlier to people who have not spent years absorbing American Girl terminology through osmosis.

Breadcrumbs help explain where you are. The glossary helps explain what things mean. Character pages give collections more context. Collection eras make complicated release histories easier to follow.

What’s Coming

The catalog is still growing, and I finally have a fairly clear order for what comes next.

First up:

  • Disney collaborations
  • Contemporary collections
  • World by Us

Once those are in place, I’ll start working through other collaboration dolls and collections and collector dolls.

After that comes the largest remaining catalog project: Truly Me dolls and collections.

Truly Me is getting saved for later because it is less “add a character and her collection” and more “please explain several decades of nearly identical dolls, outfit changes, numbering systems, and branding decisions.” I would like to enter that battle prepared.

I’m also planning a way to eventually add Create Your Own and custom dolls to Dollfolio.

Those are a little different from normal catalog entries because there is no single standard doll to check off. The goal will be to let collectors document their specific doll — rather than trying to make every possible CYO combination into its own catalog item and causing the database to simply leave this earth.

There is also a bigger collection timeline idea in the works, but I am deliberately not rushing that one. Now that Dollfolio can retain acquisition dates, sold history, grail changes, and other collection events, I want to make sure the history itself is solid before turning it into something shiny.

Basically, we are getting closer and closer to the point where if American Girl made it, you can probably put it in Dollfolio.

And if you made it, eventually I would like you to be able to put that in Dollfolio too.

Still in Beta

  • This update involved a lot of catalog changes, and I also recently moved Dollfolio’s photo storage off my computer and online, where website images probably should have been living in the first place.
  • Between the storage move and all of the catalog cleanup, some photo links may have broken along the way. If you suddenly encounter a blank image where there used to be a doll, she has not been erased from history. I am working through the broken links.
  • A larger photo-link cleanup is coming soon.
  • The new profile features are very fun, but the UX could use some work. There are already more changes planned to make editing profiles, choosing favorites, and arranging everything feel smoother and less cluttered.
  • Consider this the “look, profiles have cool things now!” version. The “and now those cool things are extremely pleasant to edit” version is still coming.
  • The new collection-history features are also laying groundwork for bigger tools later, so there may be some tweaking as I see how people actually use things like acquisition dates, grails, tags, and sold items.
  • Lists are also brand new, so if anything about creating, editing, sharing, or viewing one feels weird, please tell me.
  • Browse performance has improved, but I am still working on it. We remain cautiously optimistic about Browse.
  • The catalog is still being cleaned up character by character, so you may still find missing photos, strange components, duplicates, uncertain release details, or something that makes you say “that cannot possibly be right.” Sometimes you will be correct.

As always, if you spot something odd, use the feedback button on that item’s page. It tells me exactly where you were when you sent it, which makes investigating much easier than receiving a message that says “the Samantha thing is wrong.”

Thanks for helping make this a better place!

Collections, Characters & a Little Cleanup

A few things got tidied up today. Your collection stats should make more sense, the activity feed has learned when to stop talking, and Girl of the Year finally has her own spot in the catalog.

New

  • There are now collector leaderboards for milestones, complete sets, complete character collections, and collection size. You can see how everyone’s collections are coming along.
  • There are more milestones to reach, for anyone who was getting dangerously close to finishing most of the goals. We can’t have you running out of things to do.
  • Character collection stats now have full checklists, so you can see what you own and what you’re still hunting down.

Improved

  • The activity feed groups short batches of related updates instead of combining half your afternoon into one very looong post.
  • The catalog now calls outfits Outfits consistently, even when an older record calls them Clothing. This also fixes the mystery of Maryellen’s apparently empty collection.
  • Photos can now match the release you’re looking at. If you’re viewing Kit’s original Meet Outfit instead of her Beforever version, the photo should follow along.

Fixed

  • Best Friends now get credit for their own items! Their collections are small enough; giving their points to someone else felt a little rude. Nellie still appears alongside Samantha when you browse, but Nellie’s items count toward Nellie’s collection percentage.
  • If you added a product with one component and then had to go back and check off that same one thing again: I’m sorry. That sounds tedious because it was. One-component products now count as complete without the extra step.
  • Those one-component products also won’t pad your Complete Set milestone total anymore.
  • The top navigation should use Dollfolio’s text colors consistently across device settings. This one’s for the dark mode users who were wondering where the words went.

Catalog

  • Girl of the Year characters now have their own Browse section. Gabriela, Kira, Raquel, and the others have returned from their unexpected vacation in Historical Characters. Lovely place to visit; confusing place to live.
  • Best Friend item relationships have been cleaned up for Nellie, Elizabeth, Emily, Ruthie, and Ivy.
  • Historical character catalogs are still getting a closer look, especially when an item has different pieces or photos across releases.
  • Girl of the Year character photos and a second pass of Historical Character photos are still underway. I promise the dolls will get their headshots.

Still in Beta

  • Some older catalog items may still be missing photos, release details, or confirmed pieces. If you spot something odd, use the feedback button on that item’s page. It tells me where you were, which makes tracking down the mystery a lot easier. Thanks for helping make this a better place!

Found something odd?

Beta means I want to hear about it.

Use the feedback button anywhere on Dollfolio if something is missing, incorrect, or behaving strangely. The page you send it from is included automatically.
